The History of Freedom Course

Unit 1: The Protestant Reformation

“Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason-I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other-my conscience is captive to the Word of God.” -Martin Luther

When I think of freedom, I usually connect the idea with government. But in the 16th century, the Catholic Church held authority over the people, even to the point of threatening their eternal salvation. In this unit, you will explore how religious leaders threw off the yoke of the Catholic Church, and in the process, sparked a time period of increased individual freedom.
