THE HISTORY OF FREEDOM

"We're here to break barriers. Because free people are capable of extraordinary things."
Charles Koch

The History of Freedom Course

Introduction

Welcome

Listen to HS teacher Daniel Helms explain how he developed the course inspired by Charles Koch’s Video on Freedom.

Our Freedoms

See what you know about the pivotal documents that crystallized human rights. These documents asserted liberties like due process, freedom of speech, and protection from tyranny. Rooted in historical context, they shaped modern rights frameworks, affirming fundamental principles and setting benchmarks for justice and individual freedoms worldwide.

Ranking Our Freedoms

Unit 1: The Protestant Reformation

“Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason-I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other-my conscience is captive to the Word of God.” -Martin Luther

When I think of freedom, I usually connect the idea with government. But in the 16th century, the Catholic Church held authority over the people, even to the point of threatening their eternal salvation. In this unit, you will explore how religious leaders threw off the yoke of the Catholic Church, and in the process, sparked a time period of increased individual freedom.
